Are the American people obsolete?

Michael Lind argues that the American people have ceased to be a benefit to that country’s rich. In this Salon article, he goes so far as to say they may soon become a liability requiring export. That is, unless American corporations are forced to hire American workers or else risk losing their legal privileges.
Following Lind’s logic that only the lowest income immigrants are of use to America’s rich, one could conclude that it would be to their benefit that most Americans are pushed to that level. The rich and influential could achieve this by lowering education, health and living standards for the average American, effectively growing the class of servants to the rich.
Who am I kidding; that would never happen!
