A <a href=\"http:\/\/members.ebay.com\/aboutme\/lukearthaus\/\" title=\"eBay View About Me for lukearthaus\">postcard with the same picture is being auctioned off on eBay<\/a> in order to raise awareness of the dangers of air pollution.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.city.toronto.on.ca\/health\/burdenof.pdf\" title=\"Air Pollution Burden of Illness in Toronto\">2000 report put out by then City of Toronto Medical Officer of Health<\/a> determined the number of deaths due to air pollution:<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"http:\/\/www.city.toronto.on.ca\/health\/burdenof.pdf\">\n<p>We quantified the air pollution risk in Toronto using two different methods and found that there were between 730 and 1,400 premature deaths, and between 3,300 and 7,600 hospital admissions each year associated with air pollution breathed by the public at large.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In addition, Health Canada performed their own survey for Ontario:<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"http:\/\/www.thestar.com\/NASApp\/cs\/ContentServer?pagename=thestar\/Layout\/Article_Type1&#038;c=Article&#038;cid=1056320421478&#038;call_pageid=968332188492&#038;col=968793972154\">\n<p>Health Canada says smog is responsible for 7.7 per cent of all the premature deaths in Toronto, Hamilton, Ottawa, London and Windsor.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>If a similar report came out with &#8220;SARS&#8221; substituted for &#8220;air pollution&#8221; and &#8220;smog&#8221;, you can bet that the entire southern portion of Ontario would be placed under an immediate alert and long-term quarantine amid calls for a massive overhaul of the provincial health care system. Instead, the province is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.globeandmail.com\/servlet\/story\/RTGAM.20030624.wsmog0624\/BNStory\/National\/\" title=\"Reduce BBQ use to cut smog, Ontarians urged\">calling for limits on BBQ usage<\/a> and, in true fashion, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/stories\/2003\/06\/24\/smog_ont030624\" title=\"Ontario blames U.S. for smoggy days\">attempting to place the blame on someone else<\/a>, none of which are solutions. The province needs to start by introducing strict <em>mandatory<\/em> emission controls instead of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cleanair.web.net\/media\/press.html#jun2403\" title=\"Ontario Power breaks 2 pollution cap promises worsening smog and climate change\">voluntary caps which are easily broken<\/a>. If the province truly intends to keep the coal-burning plants running until 2015, we can start with those.
