{"id":311,"date":"2002-12-30T21:24:00","date_gmt":"2002-12-31T02:24:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/crazedmonkey.com\/blog\/uncategorised\/pew_research_global_poll.html"},"modified":"2006-10-15T19:26:11","modified_gmt":"2006-10-16T00:26:11","slug":"pew_research_global_poll","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/crazedmonkey.com\/blog\/politics\/pew_research_global_poll.html","title":{"rendered":"Contradictory poll results for Canadians"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/people-press.org\/\">Pew Research Center for the People &#038; the Press<\/a> released the results of its <a href=\"http:\/\/people-press.org\/reports\/display.php3?ReportID=165\" title=\"How Global Publics View Their Lives, Their Countries, The World, America\"> What the World Thinks in 2002<\/a> survey early this month, and it contains <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/servlet\/ArticleNews\/freeheadlines\/gam\/20021230\/COADAMS\/comment\/Comment\" title=\"Good news for Canada\">some interesting news for Canadians<\/a>, particularly in view of the recent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.macleans.ca\/xta-doc2\/2002\/12\/30\/Cover\/77548.shtml\">Maclean&#8217;s 19th Annual Year-End Poll<\/a>, which evoked <a href=\"http:\/\/crazedmonkey.com\/blog\/2002\/12\/22#w0073\" title=\"44% of Canadians are prejudiced xenophobes\"> a nice rant from me<\/a> last week.<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"http:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/servlet\/ArticleNews\/freeheadlines\/gam\/20021230\/COADAMS\/comment\/Comment\">\n<p>Another area in which Canadians outstrip all the other countries polled in the Pew project is in our positive feelings about immigration. When asked if the influence of immigrants is generally good or bad, a large majority of Canadians polled (77 per cent) say immigrants have a good influence on the way things are going.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Hey, that sounds like a good pat on the back! But wait, there&#8217;s more!<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"http:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/servlet\/ArticleNews\/freeheadlines\/gam\/20021230\/COADAMS\/comment\/Comment\">\n<p>Canadians rank religious and ethnic hatred as the No. 1 concern (55 per cent of us say so), followed by pollution and the environment (44 per cent). Close behind, 37 per cent of us cite the growing gap between the rich and the poor.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In a country where 44% would restrict Canada&#8217;s intake of Muslim immigrants, you&#8217;re damned right religious and ethnic hatred should be a concern! Similarly, in a country where, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.legermarketing.com\/documents\/spclm\/020624eng.pdf\" title=\"Canadians and Cars\"> according to a May 2002 Leger Marketing poll<\/a>, 42% own or lease either a mini-van, pick-up truck or SUV, pollution and the environment had best be one of the top concerns.
